Safe Sign (non-verbal)

A safe sign is a non-verbal signal used to communicate discomfort or the need to pause/stop BDSM activities when speaking isn't possible or practical. These signals are essential when verbal communication is restricted (during gags, throat play, or intense scenes) or for individuals with speech limitations.

Common safe signs include dropping a held object (like bells or keys), specific hand gestures (three taps, thumbs down), head movements, or deliberate double-grunts. Your safe sign should be simple to execute even when distressed or restrained. Like verbal safe words, non-verbal signals should be clearly established before play begins, demonstrated to confirm understanding, and respected immediately when used. Having both verbal and non-verbal safety signals provides crucial communication redundancy.
